Classical music aficionados, rejoice. Zubin Mehta will conduct the 130-member Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, on March 28 and 29.
Mehta conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra here in October 2001 and his this concert, like the last, is presented by the Mehli Mehta Foundation. Confirms Rashmi Poddar, the foundation’s co-chairperson and trustee, “Zubin will fly in late on March 26.
He’ll conduct his favourite pieces, including Mahler’s Symphony I.�
Tickets will probably go on sale this Saturday at the venue and will be priced at Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 1,000; special tickets of Rs 500 will be available for music students and teachers. But in the eventuality of war in the Gulf, will Zubin still come? Says Poddar, “As of Tuesday night, his visit was confirmed.�
The Mehli Mehta Music Foundation (named after Zubin’s father) also brings to the city Sangat, an annual music festival, and encourages interest in Western Classical music, enthuses teachers and students alike and brings forth performances involving local and international artists.
